Space Station 1
Joe Blades

(detail: partially unfolded pages)

(detail: the orgami folding box)

Space Station 1 is a handmade artist book. It contains four poems written by Joe Blades against a richly-hued original digital artwork. The poem pages are sheet-fed printed in full colour with a BJC-85 printer on ori masa paper, trimmed, then individually acordion folded, and paste bound in an interwoven fold/fold form. The covers have batik-dyed Fair Trade paper made in Thailand pasted onto a folio structure made from Davey board. The book is packaged in a hand-folded orgami folding box made from a sheet of mars vellum with a laser-printed mars vellum wrapper. When open, the four wings of Space Station 1 reveal the book’s full dimensions of just over 24 inches square.

Space Station 1 was printed and hand-bound by artist Joe Blades, and published by his independent Broken Jaw Press, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in the heart of the wild Western Maritimes of Canada.
