Paper Hotel
rob mclennan

Short-listed for the Archibald Lampman Award 2003. Short-listed authors’ reading 26 March 2003, 7:30 pm, @ Mother Tongue Books, 1067 Bank St, Ottawa ON

“What appears at times to be a frenzied rate of publication is better viewed as a persistent, thoughtful engagement between mr. mclennan, the contemporary Canadian poetic canon, and his need to verbally catalogue the minutiae of everyday experience. Where rob has begun to make his own way is in the decomposition of ideas into apparently illogical collisions of fragmentary thoughts. rob’s voice is fundamentally lyric and the design of his work is plastic — meaning that it is essential to regard rob’s work with the same eyes you would use to look at a painting by, say, Greg Curnoe.”
— Stephen Brockwell, The Litwit Review

“Only a few writers rob’s age are as deeply immersed in the progressive end of our literary traditions, yet the humour on the surface of rob’s work, the love of indirection and disjuncture (a la jwcurry), undercuts the obvious sincerity. [A] successful poem is a little closer to being a miracle, a living thing on the knife edge between clarity and chaos.”
— Eric Folsom, Arc magazine

Paper Hotel is a book of love poems. the 7th full-length collection by award-winning poet rob mclennan, Paper Hotel is written in the clear & evasive style mclennan has become known for, poems working in constant shift, to re-evaluate themselves. Paper Hotel is an experiment in brevity, boiled down to the bone. as Calgary poet, critic & publisher derek beaulieu recently wrote in a review of harvest: a book of signifiers (Talonbooks, 2001), mclennan is “...continuously re-appraising his own writing, & consciously setting up challenges for himself, he flourishes to learn ways of critiquing & troubling his own writing practices.” writing on love, geography & distance, these poems move with a sense of quiet urgency, folding in on themselves. worn on the sleeve, a collection that exists as fragments of a particular whole, with the cohesion of a single long poem, as the building around burns bare to the ground.

rob mclennan was winner of the Canadian Authors Association Air Canada Award in 1999 for most promising writer under the age of 30. He is a writer, critic, visual artist, editor/publisher of above/ground press & STANZAS magazine, editor of the cauldron books series published by Broken Jaw Press, & runs small press action network-ottawa (span-o). He has published poetry, fiction & critical writing across Canada, the United States, India, Australia, the UK & Czech Republic. The editor of four anthologies, including You & Your Bright Ideas: New Montreal Writing (with Andy Brown, Vehicule Press, 2001), he keeps telling people in bars that he is finishing a novel. He lives & breathes in Ottawa, Ontario.
His books with Broken Jaw include being one of five poets in Open 24 Hours (1997), Notes on drowning (1998), Manitoba highway map (1999), bagne, or Criteria for Heaven (2000), editor of & contributor to Shadowy Technicians: New Ottawa Poets (2000), Paper Hotel (2002), and Groundswell, editor (2003).
