Joe Blades has been giving readings and publishing his poetry since 1980. He was born in Halifax, NS, Canada. Based in Fredericton, NB, since 1990, he grew up in Elmsdale and Dartmouth, NS. He has also lived, studied, and/or worked in Delhaven, Halifax, and Port Hawksbury, NS; Toronto, ON; Montréal, QC; Banff, AB; New York, NY; Dumfries, Scotland; Senta, Serbia; and Pale, Republik Srpska.

Blades is a writer, artist, and publisher–president of the independent literary publishing house Broken Jaw Press Inc. founded by him in the winter of 1984 in Banff, Alberta. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (1988) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, NS, a Certificate in Film and Television (2008) from the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Co-operative, and a Master of Education (2012) from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB. Currently, he is a student in PhD Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Blades is a Past President of the League of Canadian Poets, the Canadian Poetry Association, and the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association. He is the award-winning producer–host, since 1995, of the weekly Ashes, Paper, & Beans: Fredericton’s Writing & Arts Show on CHSR 97.9 FM; is an active member of the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang writers’ group, and in the NB Coordinator for the Canadian Labour International Film Festival. Blades exhibits handmade bookworks, photographs, paintings, and objet d’art primarily in Canada and Europe. He has given readings, lectures, and workshops across Canada, in the eastern USA, Scotland, and Europe.

Blades is the editor of ten books and chapbooks including Re:myth, Stories and Poems by the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang (Broken Jaw Press, 2010). His poetry and art has appeared in periodicals and over 55 anthologies. Blades has authored over 30 poetry chapbooks and limited edition artist books. His published full-length poetry books are Cover Makes a Set (SpareTime Editions, 1990), River Suite (Insomniac Press, 1998), Open Road West (Broken Jaw Press, 2000, 2001), Casemate Poems (Widows & Orphans, 2004), from the book that doesn’t close (Broken Jaw Press, 2008), Prison Songs and Storefront Poetry (Ekstasis Editions, 2010), and Casemate Poems (Collected) (Chaudiere Books, 2011). Three of his books have been translated for Serbian-language editions as Rečna svita in the three-authors three books-in-one anthology Slike iz kanade: Tri kanadska pesnika (Niš, Serbia & Montenegro: SKC Niš, 2005), Pesme iz kazamata (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro: Rad, 2005), and Iz knjige koja se ne zatvara (Banja Luka, BiH, & Fredericton, NB: Art Print & Broken Jaw Press, 2012). Several other books, including ones in translation, are in the works.
